The provincial government went silent throughout much of the fall when Ontarians could expect to have a third reading of Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017. However, last Thursday, the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs adopted significant amendments to Bill 148. News outlets are reporting this morning that Bill 148 is set for its third reading today.

A few new additions have been added to the legislation, including changes to parental leave, to extend its duration to coincide with the federal government’s changes to EI legislation allowing parents to spread out their EI benefits over 18 months, rather than 12 months.

The amendments to Bill 148 will come into effect on the later of December 3, 2017 or the date that Bill 148 receives Royal Assent.

Need to quickly get up to speed on what impacts Bill 148 may have on your organization? Read my colleague, Chris Sinal’s blog.
