One of the simplest legal changes that could have profound effects on urban carbon footprints would be legalization of small personal electric transportation devices, such as Segways and Zenn Cars. For an inspiring take on the urban revitalization potential of Segways  (at least in the warmer months), watch Dean Kamen’s TED talk.

But while the technology is here, Ontario law is lagging behind.

While Segways and Zenn Cars remain severely restricted in Ontario, some progress is being made on another form of personal electric transportation. Bill 126, the Road Safety Act“,   is about to receive the third reading. It will define “power assisted bicycles”, including  powerful electric scooters, as “bicycles”, allowing them to be used on bicycle paths and in bicycle lanes. This is receiving mixed reviews from the cycling community.
