Congratulations to Melancthon Township on the official announcement that the Highland Companies‘ Mega Quarry proposal has been abandoned. Large areas of Melancthon depend on drinking water from highly vulnerable aquifers, which would have been endangered by the mega-quarry.

The proposal was defeated by passionate local and province-wide opposition, and perhaps because some other quarry proposals have been defeated at the OMB. Hopefully, the defeat of these quarries will push the province to do more to permit, encourage and perhaps require the use of recycled aggregate.
