The Nutrition North Canada program is a Federal Government initiative intended to subsidize the high cost of essential grocery and non-grocery items in Canada’s northern communities. Northern retailers, including The North West Company, receive funding through the program (the “Subsidy”), which they are contractually obligated to pass on to consumers directly.
Class action alleging withholding of subsidy funds by North West Co.
This proposed class action lawsuit alleges that The North West Company and its subsidiaries unlawfully retained millions of dollars of the Subsidy, despite representing that they were using the whole Subsidy to reduce food prices for northern consumers as required by the program.
The allegations in the Plaintiffs’ Statement of Claim have not been tried in court. This case is ongoing and seeks to hold North West Co. accountable for alleged misuse of funds.
