Maltol is a chemical food-flavoring agent. It is used primarily as a flavour enhancer in fruit and caramel-flavoured confectioneries and beverages.

An action was commenced against Pfizer Inc., Pfizer Canada Inc., Otsuka Chemical Co., Ltd. It is alleged that the Defendants were involved in a conspiracy between January 1, 1989, and December 31, 1995 to allocate customers and territories for sale of Maltol.

It is alleged that the price of Maltol purchased by the Plaintiff and the Class has been fixed, raised, maintained and stabilized at artificial and non-competitive levels; and Competition in the sale of Maltol has been restrained.

A settlement has been reached with the defendants that resolves the litigation. The deadline to file a claim under the settlement was September 26, 2003. This settlement has concluded and all claims have been paid.
