On September 15, after thirty years of litigation, the US Environmental Protection Agency issued a rule requiring massive improvements in the energy efficiency of North American cars and trucks. And on September 22, the EPA ordered thousands of American businesses to report their GHG emissions, starting January 1. Canada already has a mandatory GHG reporting system for the largest emitters, but the U.S. rule applies to a much larger segment of the economy, including any organization that emits 25,000 tonnes of CO2e/year. Canada will now have to do the same, which could be a surprise to the many companies below our current reporting threshold of 100,000 tonnes.
