The Ministry of the Environment has announced release of the final, Management of Excess Soil – A Guide for Best Management Practices is now available on the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry and the ministry’s website.
The document provides guidance on many aspects of managing soil for owners, developers and contractors on large soil source or receiving sites and promotes a consistent approach to managing excess soil across the province. The document outlines the ministry’s expectations for the beneficial management of excess in a manner that promotes sustainability and protects the natural environment.
The new standards for excess soil management are very demanding, and will add considerable expense to many construction and infrastructure projects. They require all major soil movements to be completely traceable and controlled under the supervision of a Qualified Person, with no commingling of soil from different sources, and with a maximum of two years of temporary storage.
