Bill 72 is intended to stimulate innovative technologies and services for water, wastewater and stormwater, to promote clean-technology jobs and to conserve and sustain water resources.  It includes a stand-alone statute, the Water Opportunities Act, 2010, which would establish a Water Technology Acceleration Project (“WaterTAP”), a non-Crown corporation that will work to encourage collaboration and exchange of ideas among industry, academics and government to facilitate creation and growth of companies that are competitive at the global level, and to advise the government on development of Ontario’s water and wastewater sectors.  The new Act would also require municipalities to institute and report on water sustainability plans, and permits the Minister of the Environment to establish targets and performance indicators for municipal water, wastewater and stormwater services.
