Social media, pollution and enforcement

I think it is fascinating how environmental groups are using electronic media to name and shame polluters that governments have chosen not to rein in. Emitters.ca maps data from the Canadian National Pollutant Release Inventory, so that interested people can look up who is polluting in their neighborhood. Repower America has set up KochIndustriesFacts.com to lambast Koch Industries, the winners of its the Snake Oil award, and allegedly the worst  environmental offender in the oil industry.  Repower America is inviting members of the public to add allegations of wrongdoing by Koch industries to the website. Will Koch ignore the campaign? Or sue for libel? In either case, one would expect state and federal regulators to look more closely at the company given the allegations published on the website. It would have been more difficult for environmental campaigners to do this 20 years ago.
