In a class of its own
As the first to certify and settle a class action in Ontario under the 1992 Class Proceedings Act, Siskinds has followed up by establishing a track record that makes it a world leader in Class Actions practice, as well as Mass Tort and Product Liability law.
The Siskinds class action and product liability team is comprised of a group of seasoned and talented litigators with a substantial record of success for their clients. Representing both plaintiffs and defendants, Siskinds has been counsel to the class in more than 15 cases. These include cases involving breast implants, TMJ implants, diet drugs, vanishing premium insurance products, improper mortgage penalties, plastic venting for mid efficiency furnaces, improper pricing of consumer products, wrongful termination and employment benefits, retirement benefits, oil refinery emissions, fireplace design, investment schemes and the e-coli tainted water tragedy.
At present, the firm is pursuing cases involving allegations of worldwide price-fixing, defective plumbing products, and inadequate retirement benefits and securities cases.
In addition to authoring 'Class Action Law and Practice', a Butterworths publication and the leading Canadian text on the subject, members of the team developed and teach a class action course at the University of Western Ontario. Team members are also frequent presenters at various continuing legal education seminars, professional conferences and meetings of the bar. Recently, team lawyers participated in gatherings of the International Bar Association, the Advocates’ Society, the Canadian Bar Association, the Osgoode National Symposium on Class Actions and the Canadian Institute.
